Joe Biggs, a prominent figure in the far-right group Proud Boys, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison for his involvement in the US Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. The sentence was handed down by US District Judge Timothy Kelly, falling below the 33 years sought by prosecutors. Biggs, a US Army veteran and former Infowars correspondent, was convicted of seditious conspiracy and other charges in May.

During the sentencing, Biggs expressed remorse for his actions and pleaded for leniency. He apologised for being "seduced" by the crowd during the riot and denied having hate in his heart, asserting that he was not a terrorist.

Prosecutors had argued that Biggs used his military experience to lead and control groups of individuals during the riot, viewing it as a second American revolution to retake the government by force. They presented evidence, including text messages, social media posts, and videos, to demonstrate the Proud Boys' coordinated efforts to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election at the Capitol.

Another Proud Boys member, Zachary Rehl, received a 15-year sentence for seditious conspiracy. Rehl, a former US Marine and leader of the Philadelphia branch of the Proud Boys, was seen on video using a chemical irritant against officers outside the Capitol during the riot.

The sentencing of Proud Boys members is part of a broader legal effort to address the events of January 6th, with over 1,100 people arrested and more than 110 convictions related to the riot as of August 6, 2023. This case underscores the legal consequences for individuals involved in the attack on the US Capitol.
